Why visit Multan

Multan is famous for its Sufi shrines, blue-tiled domes, old bazaars and warm hospitality. It is a rewarding city to explore on foot and by rickshaw or car, with many sights close to the old city.

1. Shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam

One of Multan's best-known landmarks, this large octagonal tomb dates to the early 14th century and is admired for its brickwork, glazed blue tiles and tall dome that is visible across the city. Visit in the morning or around sunset for the best light.

2. Shrine of Baha-ud-Din Zakariya

The shrine of the 13th-century Sufi saint Baha-ud-Din Zakariya is a quiet, historic place in the old city and a must-see for visitors who want to understand why Multan is called the City of Saints.

3. Tomb of Shah Gardez

The shrine of Syed Yusuf Gardezi is another notable Sufi site in Multan, known for its Multani blue tilework.

4. Multan Fort and Qasim Bagh

The old fort mound has been the centre of Multan for centuries. The Qasim Bagh area is a good starting point for the story of the city's history.

5. Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower)

Built in the colonial era around 1884, the clock tower stands in the heart of the old city and is close to the bazaars.

6. Hussain Agahi Bazaar

A classic old-city market for Multani blue pottery, khussa, handicrafts and everyday shopping. Go in the late afternoon and bargain politely. Read more in our guide to Multan food and souvenirs.

7. Multan Cricket Stadium

Home to the Multan Sultans and a host of international matches, the stadium on Vehari Road seats about 35,000. If you are in town for a match, book your room early.

Getting around and visiting tips

  • Dress modestly at shrines, cover your head where required and remove your shoes at the entrance.
  • Winter months (roughly November to February) are the most comfortable for sightseeing; summers in Multan are very hot.
  • Ask our front desk to arrange a car or driver for a day of sightseeing, and for directions to any of these places.
